Ok as some of you know my tcl (and last night historix) attempts at racing are being frustrated by eratic high pings.

When i have joined i am getting pings in the range of 6 to over 600!!! :censored:

So far my efforts to try and correct this include
1. direct connection of my modem to my gaming pc (eliminating the wifes laptop and my sons pc and ps3 from the picture) by ethernet.
2. Format and reinstall of xp cleaning out all the old crap with just the reinstallation of necessary drivers.
3. Running diagnostic tests on the modem from its control panel. (random result as shown in below attachment)which could indicate some problems???
4. restoring the modem to factory defaults
5. connecting the modem to a different phone outlet.

My system specs are as follows
GB ma 790gx motherboard 1 month old
phenom II 720 x3 1 month old
2 gig ddr2 800 ram
hd3870 512m gfx card
coolermaster xtreme 650watt psu
XP sp2

Having raced rfactor and other sims for the last couple of years ( even when still on dialup and getting consistent pings around 90-100 then!!!) now im on 1500/256 with bigpond and its turned to garbage....frustrating,, so any help/suggestions will be appreciated, Thanks, Jim.

Mate, pings of 600ms are way too high for oz servers, unless you've some crap wireless (which you haven't).

First, test a few servers' pings. (known australians are best)
Then if it's consistently crap, call your ISP's support, they are in the best position to help.

Local servers should be below 100ms by all means.

Your computer's specs are largely irrelevant.

just curious...

what is PPPoA???

I thought telstra adsl ran on PPPoE?

Also maybe try to use DNS servers other than Telstras and test again. (Find some using google and force your router to use them).

Check and see if there are any Firmware updates for Your Router.
I had to load a hacked one to my Netgear DG834G router to get it to stop losing line sync with TPG, had no ping issues though.

You could also try forcing it to run G.DMT (adsl1) and see what that does.

edit, just noticed You are adsl1, so definitely force it to use G.DMT settings if You can.

One more thing, check Your Line filter ,but I would expect You to lose sync if that were a problem.

Tanks very much for all your replys fellas!!!

Have changed over to pppoe, joined a couple of servers for a little while and seem to have a steady (and around 100 or under) ping, mind you not a busy time of night for traffic i would think.

Will give it a try tommorow night at the busy time and see what happens.

Hopefuly it is something so simple!!!

Anyway better get some sleep now. Thanks again to all of you for the suggestions....top community!!!!
