Ok, so i have upgraded from my 4 year old thing to a new HP with Vista and so far, I am far from impressed. Anyways, I have tried both copying and pasting and downloading the whole game again, but when i try to open the game it says im missing file: d3dx9_30.dll
I searched my old computer for the file and it was a windows file, but the new one does not have the file, so before i go copying and pasting that file onto my new computer in the windows folder, should there be any reason not to do this, or is there another way to fix it? Also, i searched the game folders and found very similar files, but with x68 and x80 on the end in the Direct X folder and judging by those numbers, they are the screen resolution. So any help in regards to this matter would be great so i can start practicing hidden valley and maybe actually compete if im lucky.
Thanks guys

You actually have to install DirectX 9 ON Your Vista machine, that will fix it.
Directx 10 is integrated into Vista in such a way as to make it less compatible with older Dx9 apps, hence they made it possible to run a separate install of DX9 as well, this will (should) not stuff anything, and You'll find that You have the option of running Dx10 games in either Dx9 mode or Dx10 mode.
Rfactor, GTL, GTR2, Race07 are all Dx9 based games, which is why they need Directx 9 installed.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE LATEST DX9 VERSION.

Well after being too impatient alst night, i decided to try it out, with great success, though i am now having trouble getting Historx to extract to the rFactor folder, quote: Access denied (by WinRAR). So I am dealing with that atm, bout to try google, but seriously contemplating installing my XP SP2 cd onto it already, Vista just doesn't seem compatible with any older windows.

when you install, single right click on the executables, select "run as administrator"
(vista takes a longtime to get its act together too, I was too impatient, but now wait and count "one Murrumbidgee, 2 Murrumbidgee... 10 Murrumbidgee" and bingo, it starts ahah
If I hadn't installed anything I would have gone back to XP but all is okay now.

Rant mode on
going a little off topic my wife's laptop which i use around the house to has Vista on it and i still cant believe how long you have to wait sometimes for a program to open or when vista freezes for 10 secs. How many times i have said F+)*(^ing Vista while waiting for something simple to execute.......
Rant mod off
It is still a Beta IMHO and even if it did run smoothly it just looks like XP with a new lick of paint.

OK, How much free space does Your C: (windows install) partition have on it?
As unfortunately the install puts the temp files to the C drive before installing it to wherever You have Rfactor installed.
I had to increase the size of my C: drive partition to get it installed, If Your Rfactor is on C drive then You will need more than 3 gig available just to install it, the temp files auto delete when done.
Other than that a security issue with Vista.
There is a very good website with tweak info for XP and Vista, check it out.

Well I got it all sorted. Basically what happened was that Vista has this thing called a User account protection (i think). Its the really annoying thing that pops up saying "vista would like to annoy the **** out of again, are you sure your sure that you want to do this?"
Well this same thing blocks things being extracted from WinRAR. I had to disable this, however it has left the computer a little more vulnerable to problems, but at least i can play the game now :P

After doing more reading thanks to imperious (link) my wife and i are just going to get rid of vista off the laptop. Its a system hog and to be honest i dont see how it is better than XP. I find it fustrating most of the time.

My 2c,
I have Vista 64 and almost love it.....
I had to build a new pc :ohwell: but good excuse to get a better simulator rig :eyebrows:
I have had to set it up as dual boot because the boys at hyperstimulator haven't got their act together on Vista drivers yet :censored:
It takes a while to find your way around, but it flies, but you need a ton of ram im using 4Gb Dominator ram and an E8400 couldn't be happier (except for the Hyper Drivers) I have bought a G25 but i have to build a cockpit before i use it.
Scott, i have turned off user account protection, i don't think it is a big deal, you still get the usual dialog boxes.

cool. Well it has 4 Gb RAM, centrino 2 2.53 core processors and a 256mb graph card ( was gonna go a 512, but i wouldnt have gotten the RAM if i did), so it does the job, but i have XP2 here, so i reckon ill just throw it on.

Yeah i have set mine up to dual boot, with XP sp2, so when i'm league racing, boot to xp sp2 and my Hyper works, it is a pain but overcomes the problem.
