looking at new video card in the next few weeks... what would be the best one to get...

ATI 4890 1 gb = $229
ATI 5770 1 gb = $205
Nvidia GTS 250 1 gb = $161
Nvidia GTX 275 896mg = $278

Might look at 2 x GTS 250 1 gb = $362

as per prices from MSY Computers - http://www.msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf

is the 5770 a newer card... if so, why is it cheaper than the 4890?

My system

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz
Memory: 8190MB RAM
Hard Drive: 740 GB Total
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS (current)
Monitor: Samsung 22" SyncMaster T220 Widescreen
Motherboard: ASUS-P5Q-Pro
PSU: 650w Thermaltake

4890 is top end of 4 series card....

5770 is newer technology but by no strech of the inagination better than the 4890, they would perform quite well.

basically the HD4890 but with DX11 just around the corner in upcoming titles then maybe the 5770 is the go, another consideration is your OS. If your not using Windows 7 then DX11 is no good anyway.

Right now I would go HD4890, at the end of the day still get 180 for it second hand and by which time 5850s may have come down in price....

A bit more info for you Bish!

"The value of the 5770 in particular is clearly not going to be in its performance. Compared to AMD’s 4870, it loses well more than it wins, and if we throw out Far Cry 2, it’s around 10% slower overall. It also spends most of its time losing to NVIDIA’s GTX 260, which unfortunately the 4870 didn’t have so much trouble with. AMD clearly has put themselves in to a hole with memory bandwidth, and the 5770 doesn’t have enough of it to reach the performance it needs to be at.

If you value solely performance in today’s games, we can’t recommend the 5770. Either the 4870 1GB or the GTX 260 would be the better buy.

So here’s the bottom line for the 5770: Unless you absolutely need to take advantage of the lower power requirements of the 40nm process (e.g. you pay a ton for power) or you strongly believe that DirectX 11 will have a developer adoption rate faster than anything we’ve seen before for DirectX, the 1GB 4870 or GTX 260 is still the way to go. this just reiterates my view that the 4890 would be the go.

yo bishy i am building a new system in a couple of weeks time and still having trouble deciding on which card i will be getting. im thinking of getting either

ati 5850
ati 5870
ati 4890

i was looking around on overclokers forum and the guys told me the 5770 is more efficient and cooler than the 4890 but has less grunt. if you want more power for gaming think the 4890 is the way to go.

atm i am thinking of getting 4890 vapor x since the 58xx are impossible to find (from what i heard) http://www.mwave.com.au/newAU/mwaveAU/productdetail.asp?CartID=mAU@JTWYSBLG4RT2MPYWKTCCU Z8S6R8K2LSO1P5T153BMW239Q&sku=42060077 you should also have a look at it bishy
